SUBJECT [CIGAR]
HVC 10th Anniversary - Nicaraguan puro, medium to full body with notes of earth, cedar, and natural tobacco sweetness
PAIRING [SPIRIT]
Colonel E.H. Taylor Single Barrel Bourbon - 100 proof, bottled in bond with rich vanilla, butterscotch, and oak
ANALYSIS / NOTES
The flavors meshed exceptionally well in this pairing. The Colonel Taylor brought out a nuance of caramel sweetness in the HVC that I hadn't noticed when smoking it alone. The bourbon's butterscotch character complemented the cigar's natural tobacco sweetness, while the 100 proof provided enough backbone to stand up to the full-bodied Nicaraguan tobacco. The cedar notes in the cigar found a perfect partner in the oak from the barrel aging. This is the kind of pairing that makes you slow down and appreciate each sip and draw - the way they enhance each other creates something greater than either component alone.
SUBJECT [CIGAR]
Alec Bradley Project 40 - Nicaraguan blend, medium to full body with toasted bread, nuts, and spice
PAIRING [SPIRIT]
Colonel E.H. Taylor Single Barrel Bourbon - 100 proof, bottled in bond with rich vanilla, butterscotch, and oak
ANALYSIS / NOTES
I got distinct bread notes from the Project 40 that I hadn't experienced before. The overall sweetness of the Colonel Taylor made it feel as if I was eating a warm biscuit with cool honey drizzled over it. The bourbon's butterscotch character transformed the cigar's toasted qualities into something almost pastry-like. It was a surprisingly comforting combination - the kind of pairing that makes you feel like you're sitting on a porch somewhere warm. The spice from the cigar provided just enough contrast to keep the sweetness from becoming overwhelming.
